Solar Moonshot Program Grantee

Serving a rural community of just over 2,300 residents, Bekkum Memorial Library is much more than a place to borrow books—it's a community hub that offers after-school programs, storytimes, adult education and outreach for residents of all ages. With support from the Solar Moonshot Program, the library replaced its 17-year-old solar system with a new 18.7 kW rooftop array. The upgraded system is expected to generate 24.5 MWh of clean electricity annually, offsetting 104% of the library's current electricity use while reducing long-term operating costs. The project also creates new opportunities for community education. As part of the installation, the library plans to incorporate a solar production display that allows visitors to monitor the system's real-time energy generation and learn about the benefits of renewable energy. In the coming year, the library will further its commitment to environmental stewardship by developing an outdoor sensory and prairie garden, creating another space where community members can connect with and appreciate the natural world.
