Solar Moonshot Program Grantee

The Lake Mills Area School District is transforming its elementary and middle schools into Community Resilience Centers—trusted spaces that will provide critical resources during emergencies while reducing energy costs year-round. With support from the Solar Moonshot Program, the district installed two solar systems totaling 300 kW across both campuses. The 200 kW system at the middle school will be paired with battery storage to provide backup power during outages, while the 100 kW system at the elementary school will generate clean energy to support daily operations. Together, the systems are expected to produce more than 461,000 kWh of renewable electricity annually, saving the district an estimated $58,000 each year. Already designated as an emergency shelter and operations center with the Red Cross, the middle school will be equipped to provide emergency power, refrigeration, lighting, charging stations and space for first responders and residents during disasters. Beyond emergency preparedness, the district is integrating renewable energy into classroom curriculum and launching a public energy dashboard, giving students and community members the opportunity to learn about clean energy through real-time system performance.
